CHOOSE - YOUR BLANK

The shape of a blank is never a fixed choice.
It influences response, feeling, stability, and the relationship to effort, and it may respond differently depending on the playing context, the musician’s condition, or the musical situation.

Some shapes favor ease, responsiveness, or brilliance, while others bring greater stability, density, or control.
These shapes do not oppose each other: they can be complementary, each responding to a specific need.

It is common for a musician to feel more comfortable with a certain shape depending on:

– the length of playing,
– the level of fatigue,
– the acoustic environment (indoors or outdoors),
– the repertoire,
– or simply the feeling of the day.

For this reason, at the Donat Workshop, we consider the cup shape as a tool of adaptation, not as a single and definitive choice.
Certain combinations of shapes can support the musician in different situations, without altering their fundamental references.

It is in this spirit that we develop mouthpiece sets, combining several shapes designed for complementary uses, while maintaining a coherent playing feel.

LIGHT BLANK

Shape that favors brilliance and ease of playing.
It offers quick response, a feeling of freedom, and requires little energy to speak.

CLASSIC BLANK

Shape intended for musicians who wish to stay close to standard references.
It offers familiar landmarks and a balanced playing feel.
It is notably the reference shape used by Bach

CLASSIC SHORT SHANK BLANK

A variation of the classic shape, designed for musicians who wish to keep their familiar references while gaining responsiveness and endurance.
The shorter length provides a more immediate response and a more compact playing feel.

MASSIVE BLANK

Shape that brings a darker sound and greater stability.
The additional mass helps the attack, improves precision, and tends to smooth out playing imperfections.

TULIP BLANK

An intermediate shape between light and massive.
It offers excellent centering, great fluidity, while keeping body in the sound and a well-defined core.
A good balance between responsiveness and density.

HEAVY BLANK

High-impedance shape

Impedance: the resistance the mouthpiece offers to the passage of air and to vibration.
High impedance means greater resistance, therefore less free airflow and vibration.

This shape:

strongly smooths out imperfections,
– produces a matte, darker sound,
– offers a strong sense of control and stability,
– but requires more energy from the musician.
